The Savanna
One of the habitats that a African elephant lives in is a savanna. A savanna is a grassy plain in tropical and subtropical regions. It has very few trees because there is not enough rainfall to support the growth of most of them. Savannas only get about 15 to 25 inches of rain during the wet season. Because of that, it is very hard for some species to survive through the dry season. Elephants can turn a forest into a savanna by knocking trees down, stripping the bark from the trees for food, and stepping on tree seedlings. Many animals that live here are herbivores. Did you know that almost half of Africa is considered a savanna? That is about 5 million square miles! Savannas are very unique biomes. Experts have found almost all of the types of soil there!
