Leaves
African elephants eat leaves on an everyday basis. They use their long trunk and reach up to the trees, as seen in the picture below. Elephants eat a tremendous amount of vegetation a day. In fact, they eat 5% of their body weight per day. African elephants don't just eat the leaves off of the trees; they also eat the bark and the branches. One of the elephants favorite food is the sap from the bark. They enjoy stripping the bark off and tasting the sap. Scientists say that trees are destroyed because of elephants.
